MA in Modern China Studies, University of Freiburg (Germany)

The MA in Modern China Studies at the Institute for China Studies, University of Freiburg (Germany), is a two-year, English-language graduate program with an emphasis on conducting  research. Coursework focuses on honing research skills and methods, and improving language facilities through translation classes (for native Chinese speakers) or a semester abroad (for non-native Chinese speakers). Students are taught by and work closely with internationally renowned scholars, such as Nicola Spakowski and Daniel Leese, and have access to a robust research infrastructure that includes – in addition to the university library with a China studies branch – local collections (such as the “Mao Legacy” ERC project’s offline collection) and the Crossasia system that grants many German universities access to important online databases. One huge advantage of this program is that tuition fees are comparatively low – EU students pay 142 euros per semester and non-EU students 1500 euros per semester. These fees largely subsidize the cost of local transport and meals in university cafeterias.   

Freiburg is a large university town located in the southwest corner of Germany on the edge of the beautiful Black Forest, next to France and Switzerland, and is well known throughout Germany as the sunniest place in the country. The university has a sizable international student body and the surrounding area is a haven for outdoors and sports enthusiasts.
