Permanent

Specialism
Curators, Conservation and Reading Room

The British Library holds an important collection of Chinese books and manuscripts, ranging from the earliest written records to electronic publications from this year, and totalling c. 90,000 books. We are looking for a curator to develop and manage these collections, enabling access to them by the widest possible range of audiences, in the UK as well as around the world. The successful candidate will join the Department of Asian and African Studies, and alongside their day-to-day curatorial responsibilities will have a particular responsibility for delivering a programme of work to convert old printed and card catalogues into online catalogue records. We are looking to appoint someone with a degree or equivalent in a subject relevant to the collections, who has degree-level knowledge of Chinese, as well as fluent written and oral communication skills in English, and the ability to promote the collections to a wide range of audiences. Cataloguing, bibliographic, or technical skills gained from previous experience in a research library or other academic environment would be advantageous, as would knowledge of other relevant languages, including Manchu or Mongolian.
